A Memory (Poem)

The  signal  flashed  red  at  the  crossing,

my  driver  brought  the  car  to  a  halt,

Oh!  I'd  be  late  to  reach  my  school,

but  would  it  really  be  my  fault?

Anxiously,  I  peeped  out  of  my  window,

for  the  light  to  turn  from  amber  to  green,

when  my  eyes  met  those  of  a  poor  boy,

looking  more  anxious  than  I  had  been.

He  stood  on  the  narrow  road-divider,

grumbling  cars  and  fuming  bikes  everywhere,

his  hands;  now  stretched  and  now  withdrawn,

wondered  if  I  had  anything  to  share.

So  did  I  quickly  search  into  my  pockets,

but  found  nothing  worth  giving  that  he'd  value,

we  exchanged  sad  looks  of  disappointment,

what  shall  I  give?  I  didn't  have  a  clue.

At  last,  the  flash  turned  from  amber  to  green,

I  waved  and  gave  a  smile  that  said  "sorry",

he  waved  back  with  a  smile  of  pure  joy!

That  smile's  been  a  gift  to  my  memory....
